Description
Rotenone is an organic substance with a molecular formula of C23H22O6. It is found in the roots of leguminous coronas produced in tropical and subtropical Asia, and is also contained in some Chinese herbal medicines such as sweet potato seeds, bitter sandalwood, and Kunming spatholobi root. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ether and many other organic solvents. It decomposes when exposed to light and air. Its solution in organic solvents is colorless. When exposed to the air, it is oxidized, turning yellow, orange, and then dark red, and can precipitate dehydrorotenone and rotenone which are toxic to insects.
