Description:
It is a kind of dextrohexaaldose prepared by hydrolysis of lactose. It is white crystal or crystalline powder in appearance, has no special smell, is soluble in water and pyridine, and slightly soluble in glycerol and alcohol. D-galactose is a component of agar, plant gum, viscose, raffinose, lactose, honey disaccharide and other sugars. It exists in snail protein gland, frog egg, brain nerve tissue and other animal materials with galactoside and galactic anhydride molecules. Free state is found in milk. It combines with glucose to form lactose. Mucus acid can be obtained by nitric acid oxidation.
