Indigo naturalis, originally contained in Kaibao Materia Medica, is a dry powder or lump made from the leaves or stems and leaves of Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek., Polygonaceae Polygonum tinctorium Ait., or Cruciferae Isatis indigotica Fort. It has the functions of clearing heat and detoxification, cooling blood and eliminating spots, purging liver meridian and consolidating fire. It is mainly used for warm toxic spots, blood heat vomiting, infantile eclampsia, mouth sore and throat arthralgia. It is also the main component of blowing throat powder commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine.
